In my quest to be self-sufficient in terms of plowing my own driveway, I’ve been perusing my local Craigslist looking for something that won’t pass inspection for some reason (thus knocking the price down) but that would be a reasonably reliable plow mule for me. No point in having a POS truck that’s constantly breaking down on me. I also have to be able to fix things that DO break mostly by myself, because I won’t be driving it to a mechanic. For one, I don’t want to put a lot of money into it. Two, it won’t be registered.

Last week I spotted a decent late 90's Ford for $2k with no apparent issues besides rust (a given). It’s gone, I’m sure someone snapped it up.

So check this thing out! ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )

$2,500 for a 2001 F350 diesel. Doesn’t say “just needs...” but it does say won’t pass inspection. “Interior excellent!” Is more than I can say of most yard trucks I’ve seen or had.

What does Oppo think of a 2001 Ford with a 7.3 diesel?

Great trucks! Wouldn’t it be easier to buy a snow blower? How long is your driveway!?

It would be a fine plow truck as long as the frame is still solid. I wouldn’t trust a truck with a rusted out frame to be able to handle the punishment of plow duty.

Driveway is about 250' and has a wide area at the end. It would probably take me 2 hours to snowblow, which is time I don’t have. ~ 15 min with a truck. And more fun.

Hmm

Oh, I’m only plowing the one driveway. I’ve actually used some really awful trucks to plow in the past, just not at this house. The driveway is a gentle downslope, so nothing too punishing so long as I don’t smash into the snowbanks on purpose.

I don’t know how this will workout pricewise, but have you considered a tractor and plow/ snowblower? I think that would be considerably faster than doing it by hand, and also saves you some of the cost & hassles of a truck (registration, insurance, etc.)

My dad has an old John Deere 317 from the 70's and it’s an awesome little tractor. And I mean it’s a TRACTOR, not a riding mower. It’s got a Kohler 2 cylinder that drives a hydrostatic system, so i t’s not “fast” but it makes TORQUE. It will push a lot of snow and there’s a powered snowblower attachment for the front (dad normally uses the plow, but is on the lookout for the snowblower to add to his ).

I’d love a small tractor. Unfortunately, I think it would be a lot more than a cheap truck. But then, it would also be a lot more useful. We might buy some land adjacent to us, if it goes up for sale, in which case I’d suddenly have a strong case for a tractor. ‘Till then, it’s hard to beat a $2000 beater truck for moving snow.
